Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask vs. Aquaphor Lip Repair

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask vs. Aquaphor Lip Repair
The short answer

Laneige is a thick, flavored overnight mask. Aquaphor is a fragrance-free ointment you can use all day.

Both put a protective layer on your lips, but they build it differently. Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is waxes and rich emollients with shea and murumuru butters and coconut oil, plus fragrance and color. It goes on thick and stays through the night. Aquaphor Lip Repair uses castor oil, shea butter and beeswax to seal, glycerin and panthenol to hydrate, and bisabolol to soothe, with no fragrance or dye.

If your lips are cracked or easily irritated, Aquaphor is the better buy, and it costs a fraction as much. Laneige is worth it if you want a heavier overnight layer and enjoy the flavor.

How to choose

What separates them

  1. How irritated your lips are

Cracked, peeling or stinging lips do better with fewer extras. Aquaphor is fragrance-free and dye-free, with panthenol and bisabolol to calm. Laneige contains fragrance and colorants.

    Look for
A fragrance-free ointment for cracked lips.
    Avoid
    Flavored balms on broken skin.
  2. When you'll use it

Laneige’s jar and heavy texture make it a bedtime product. Aquaphor’s tubes go in a pocket for reapplying all day.

    Look for
Tubes for daytime, a jar for the nightstand.
    Avoid
Carrying a jar you have to dip a finger into.
  3. How heavy you like it

Laneige is the thicker, glossier layer, built on waxes and butters. Aquaphor is softer, built on oils with a little beeswax. If you like waking up with lips still coated, Laneige does that better.

    Look for
A thick wax-and-butter layer for overnight.
    Avoid
    A heavy mask under lipstick.
  4. Cost for what you get

An Aquaphor two-pack holds about as much as Laneige’s 20 g jar and costs a fraction as much. With Laneige you’re paying for flavor and texture, not for an ingredient Aquaphor lacks.

    Look for
Cost per gram, not per container.
    Avoid
Assuming the pricier one works harder.
Neither one protects from the sun

Neither Laneige nor Aquaphor Lip Repair contains SPF, and lips burn too. When you’re outdoors during the day, use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher and reapply it often.

Overnight Mask Waxes + Butters Flavored

Laneige is mostly emollients and waxes. The list opens with diisostearyl malate and hydrogenated polyisobutene, two glossy, cushiony emollients, followed by a plant-sterol ester, microcrystalline wax, shea butter and candelilla and carnauba waxes. Murumuru seed butter and coconut oil add more softening. The result is a dense, glossy coat that stays on through the night.

The vitamin C and berry juices (raspberry, pomegranate, grape) sit at the very end of the list, in small amounts. The original Berry version also contains fragrance and two colorants, and each flavor has its own ingredient list. That’s fine for most lips, but skip it if yours sting, crack or react to flavored balms.

The 20 g jar works best on a nightstand. Smooth on a thick layer before bed.

Pros
  • Thick layer of waxes and butters stays put overnight
  • Shea butter, murumuru butter and coconut oil soften flaky lips
  • Comes in many flavors
Cons
  • Contains fragrance and colorants
  • Costs far more per gram than Aquaphor
  • A jar you dip a finger into is a bedside product, not a pocket one
Best for
Overnight use Dry, flaky lips that aren't irritated
Not for
Cracked or stinging lips Fragrance-sensitive lips Daytime reapplication on the go
Aquaphor Lip Repair

Aquaphor Lip Repair: a plain, fragrance-free lip ointment

Best Overall
Aquaphor Lip Repair Ointment Two Tube Pack

Fragrance-free ointment for chapped lips, in tubes.

Two Tubes Fragrance Free Panthenol + Shea

Despite the Aquaphor name, Lip Repair isn’t petrolatum like the Healing Ointment. It’s built on octyldodecanol and castor seed oil, two emollients that give it slip and shine, with shea butter and beeswax to seal moisture in. Glycerin and panthenol (vitamin B5) sit near the top of the list to draw in and hold water.

Bisabolol, the soothing compound from chamomile, plus vitamins C and E round it out. There’s no fragrance, flavor or dye, which makes it the safer choice when your lips are cracked, peeling or quick to sting.

Each tube holds 0.35 fl oz. Keep one by the bed and one in your bag, and reapply whenever your lips feel tight.

Pros
  • Fragrance-free and dye-free
  • Castor oil, shea and beeswax seal; glycerin and panthenol hydrate
  • Bisabolol, from chamomile, helps calm irritated lips
  • Two portable tubes for a fraction of Laneige’s cost
Cons
  • Thinner layer than Laneige overnight
  • Contains beeswax, so it isn’t vegan
  • No SPF
Best for
Chapped or cracked lips Fragrance-sensitive lips All-day reapplication
Not for
Anyone who wants a flavored balm
Vaseline Lip Therapy

Best Budget Seal
Vaseline Lip Therapy Original Mini

Fragrance-free petrolatum balm in two mini tins.

Petrolatum Fragrance Free Two Tins

Vaseline Lip Therapy Original is petrolatum with a little shea butter and vitamin E. Petrolatum is the most effective occlusive used in skin care: it cuts water loss through the skin more than waxes or plant oils do, which is why dermatologists recommend it for cracked lips.

What it lacks is anything that adds moisture. There’s no glycerin or panthenol like Aquaphor has, so it works best smoothed over lips that are still damp, or over a hydrating balm. It has no fragrance, and the tins are the cheapest way to keep a balm in every bag.

Pros
  • Almost pure petrolatum, the strongest moisture seal there is
  • Fragrance-free, with just shea butter and vitamin E added
  • Lowest cost of the three; two mini tins
Cons
  • No humectants, so it seals but adds no moisture of its own
  • Tin means applying with a finger
  • No SPF
Best for
Very chapped lips Overnight sealing on a budget
Not for
Anyone avoiding petroleum-based products

Conclusion

Choose Aquaphor Lip Repair if your lips are chapped, cracked or easily irritated. Castor oil, shea butter and beeswax seal in moisture, glycerin and panthenol hydrate, and bisabolol soothes. It’s fragrance-free and dye-free, comes in tubes you can carry, and costs a fraction of what Laneige does.

Choose Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask if you want a thick, flavored overnight layer and your lips aren’t reactive. Its waxes and plant butters form a heavier coat that stays on through the night, but it contains fragrance and colorants.

Choose Vaseline Lip Therapy if you just want the simplest seal. It is almost pure petrolatum, the most effective ingredient for locking moisture in, with no fragrance and the lowest cost of the three.

Plenty of people use both: Aquaphor through the day, Laneige at bedtime. Neither has SPF, so outdoors, use a lip balm with sunscreen.
