Same filters, same 80-minute water resistance. The finish and the bottle size are what separate them.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 70 and Banana Boat Sport SPF 50 are built from the same four chemical filters: avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene. Both labels say broad spectrum and Water Resistant (80 Minutes). Neutrogena uses more of each filter in a silica-based lotion that dries down close to matte. Banana Boat uses less, adds glycerin and aloe for a softer lotion feel, and comes in an 8 fl oz bottle that costs far less per ounce.
So the choice comes down to where it goes. For your face and daily wear, Neutrogena feels better. For covering your whole body at the beach or a game, Banana Boat gives you more sunscreen to use generously.

What's actually different between them
SPF 70 vs. SPF 50. Applied at the amount used in testing, SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB and SPF 70 about 98.6%. That gap is small. Most people apply far less sunscreen than the test uses, so using enough matters more than the extra 20 points. For your whole body, that's about an ounce, roughly a shot glass full.
Water resistance. Both bottles say Water Resistant (80 Minutes). That's the longest rating a US sunscreen can carry, so there's no difference here. Reapply either one after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, as soon as you towel off, and otherwise at least every two hours.
Filters. Both brands use the same four chemical filters: avobenzone for UVA, plus homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene for UVB. Neither contains oxybenzone. Neutrogena simply uses more of each: 15% homosalate against 7.5%, and 10% octocrylene against 5%. That higher dose is how it reaches SPF 70.
Fragrance and finish. All three lotions list fragrance, so none suits skin that reacts to scent. The real texture difference is the base. Neutrogena's silica and film-former dry down to a matte feel. Banana Boat's glycerin and aloe leave skin feeling moisturized, a little like body lotion. On an oily face, Neutrogena wears better. On dry arms and legs, Banana Boat's softer feel is an advantage.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 70: the drier, higher-SPF pick
Higher-SPF lotion with a dry, matte-leaning finish.
Neutrogena packs more filter into each ounce: avobenzone 3%, homosalate 15%, octisalate 5% and octocrylene 10%, plus butyloctyl salicylate to help push the SPF higher. Avobenzone handles UVA; the other three cover UVB.
The feel comes from the base. Silica, a styrene/acrylates film-former and dimethicone soak up shine and leave a dry, close-to-matte finish, which is why it’s easier to wear on your face, neck and under a shirt collar. It’s labeled broad spectrum and Water Resistant (80 Minutes), it’s oxybenzone-free, and it does contain fragrance.
The catch is the bottle. At 3 fl oz, it’s sized for daily face and arm coverage, not a family beach day. And SPF 70 blocks about 98.6% of UVB against about 98% for SPF 50, so buy it for the finish, not the number.
Banana Boat Sport SPF 50: the body sunscreen for long days outside
Water-resistant SPF 50 in a big, low-cost-per-ounce bottle.
Banana Boat Sport uses the same four filters as Neutrogena at lower amounts: avobenzone 2.7%, homosalate 7.5%, octisalate 4.5% and octocrylene 5%. That’s enough for broad spectrum SPF 50, which blocks about 98% of UVB when you apply enough.
The base is glycerin, silica and dimethicone with aloe and vitamin E, so it feels more like a regular body lotion than Neutrogena’s dry-touch finish. The label reads Water Resistant (80 Minutes), the same as Neutrogena, and it’s made without oxybenzone or octinoxate. It does contain fragrance.
Its biggest advantage is volume. The 8 fl oz bottle holds more than twice as much as Neutrogena’s 3 fl oz and costs far less per ounce. Full-body coverage takes about an ounce each time, and the big bottle is what lets you apply generously and reapply all afternoon.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 55: the same lotion with a little less filter
Same dry-touch formula with a little less homosalate.
This is the SPF 70’s sibling. It uses the same four filters, avobenzone 3%, octisalate 5% and octocrylene 10%, with homosalate at 10% instead of 15%. It drops the butyloctyl salicylate booster but keeps the same silica-and-polymer base, so it feels the same: dry, light and close to matte.
It’s labeled Water Resistant (80 Minutes) and non-comedogenic, and it contains fragrance. Pick it if you like the Ultra Sheer feel and SPF 55 is enough for your day. Applied properly, the gap to SPF 70 is less than one percentage point of UVB.
Pick by what your day looks like
-
Desk day or commute: Neutrogena SPF 70
Its dry-touch base sets down close to matte, which is easier to wear on your face and under a collar. A 3 fl oz bottle lasts a good while if it’s mostly covering face, neck and hands.
-
Pool, beach or a game: Banana Boat Sport
Same 80-minute water resistance, a bigger bottle and a lower cost per ounce. Full-body coverage takes about an ounce per application, so bottle size matters.
-
Oily or breakout-prone face: stay with Neutrogena
Banana Boat’s glycerin-and-aloe base feels like body lotion. If you don’t need SPF 70, the Ultra Sheer SPF 55 has the same dry finish and is labeled non-comedogenic.
-
Fragrance-sensitive: look elsewhere
All three lotions list fragrance. If scented products make your skin itch or sting, a fragrance-free mineral sunscreen is the better buy.
Both bottles are labeled Water Resistant (80 Minutes). After 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, protection drops no matter which SPF you bought. SPF 70 doesn’t buy extra time in the water. Reapply on the label’s schedule, and right away after you towel off.
Choose Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 70 for your face and everyday wear. Silica and a film-forming polymer give it a drier, close-to-matte finish, and its filter levels are higher across the board. It’s the one to pick if you have oily skin or hate a greasy feel.
Choose Banana Boat Sport SPF 50 for body coverage and long days outside. It carries the same Water Resistant (80 Minutes) label, the 8 fl oz bottle holds more than twice as much, and it costs far less per ounce, so you’re more likely to use enough and reapply.
All three lotions here contain fragrance, so if scented products irritate your skin, skip them. Whichever you buy, reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, right after towel drying, and at least every two hours.
