CeraVe is the gentle mineral pick. Neutrogena Dry-Touch is the matte, water-resistant bargain.
CeraVe Hydrating Mineral SPF 30 uses only titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, then adds three ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. It’s fragrance-free and feels like a light moisturizer, but it leaves some white cast. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 55 uses four chemical filters in a silica-rich lotion that dries matte, resists water for 80 minutes and costs much less per ounce. It does contain fragrance.
Dry or sensitive skin should start with CeraVe. Oily skin, outdoor days and tight budgets point to Dry-Touch. We also cover Neutrogena’s newer Ultra Sheer Daily Face SPF 70 with bemotrizinol, the lightest and most invisible of the three for everyday face wear.

Filters, skin care and finish
All three are broad spectrum and at least SPF 30, the minimum dermatologists recommend. The numbers matter less than they look: SPF 30 blocks about 96.7% of UVB, SPF 55 about 98.2% and SPF 70 about 98.6%. Applying enough, and reapplying, makes a bigger difference than the gap between them.
Here is what actually separates them:
- Filters: CeraVe is mineral-only (6% titanium dioxide, 5% zinc oxide). Both Neutrogenas use chemical filters; the SPF 70 adds bemotrizinol, a newer and very stable UVA/UVB filter.
- Skin care: CeraVe adds three ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. The Neutrogenas add vitamin E, plus feverfew extract in the SPF 70.
- Fragrance: CeraVe is fragrance-free. Dry-Touch contains fragrance.
- Water resistance: Dry-Touch is water resistant for 80 minutes. The other two aren't water resistant.
- White cast: CeraVe leaves a white tint, most visible on deeper skin. The Neutrogenas don't.
If you want one sunscreen for everything, including swimming, Dry-Touch is the only water-resistant option here. If you want the gentlest daily face sunscreen, it's CeraVe. If you want the lightest, most invisible one under makeup, it's the SPF 70 face formula.
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 55: matte, tough and cheap
Matte, water-resistant SPF 55 at the lowest cost.
Dry-Touch uses four chemical filters: 3% avobenzone, 10% homosalate, 5% octisalate and 10% octocrylene. There’s no oxybenzone or octinoxate. Right after water come an oil-absorbing polymer (styrene/acrylates copolymer) and silica, which is why it dries to a matte, slightly powdery finish.
It’s water resistant for 80 minutes, noncomedogenic and comes in a 3 oz tube that costs the least per ounce of the three by a wide margin. It works on face and body.
It does contain fragrance, along with beeswax and jojoba esters. If scented products make your skin itch or sting, pick CeraVe instead.
- Dries matte, good for oily skin
- Water resistant for 80 minutes
- Costs the least per ounce by far
- No white cast
- Contains fragrance
- Face-and-body lotion, a bit heavier than a face fluid
- Chemical filters only
CeraVe Hydrating Mineral SPF 30: sunscreen and moisturizer in one
Mineral SPF with ceramides for dry, sensitive skin.
CeraVe uses only mineral filters, 6% titanium dioxide and 5% zinc oxide, which are the least likely to irritate. The base reads like a CeraVe moisturizer: glycerin second on the list, then ceramides NP, AP and EOP with cholesterol and phytosphingosine, plus niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate and panthenol.
That makes it the most comfortable choice for dry, tight or sensitive skin, and it carries the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. It’s fragrance-free, oil-free and noncomedogenic, in a 2.5 oz tube.
The trade-offs: it leaves a white tint that’s hard to blend on medium to deep skin, it isn’t water resistant, and at SPF 30 it has the lowest number here, though that still meets the dermatologist-recommended minimum.
- Mineral-only: 6% titanium dioxide, 5% zinc oxide
- Three ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid
- Fragrance-free, oil-free and noncomedogenic
- Leaves a white tint, most visible on medium to deep skin
- Not water resistant
- Lowest SPF of the three
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Daily Face SPF 70: light, invisible and new
Light, cast-free face sunscreen with bemotrizinol.
This is Neutrogena’s face-specific formula, and the headline ingredient is bemotrizinol (BEMT), a broad-spectrum filter that covers both UVA and UVB and stays stable in sunlight. It’s paired with avobenzone, homosalate and octisalate.
The base is water, light esters and silica, with vitamin E and feverfew extract, and no heavy waxes. It’s thinner than Dry-Touch, dries fast and leaves no white cast, so it sits well under makeup on any skin tone.
It isn’t water resistant, and the 1.4 oz tube costs more per ounce than Dry-Touch. Use it for daily wear, not the beach.
- Bemotrizinol, a stable UVA/UVB filter new to US sunscreens
- No white cast
- Light, fast-drying face formula
- Not water resistant
- Small 1.4 oz tube costs more per ounce than Dry-Touch
- Chemical filters only
Which sunscreen fits your skin?
Which is best for oily skin?
Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 55. Silica and an oil-absorbing polymer sit near the top of the list, so it dries matte. The SPF 70 face sunscreen is a good second choice. CeraVe’s glycerin-rich lotion is the least matte of the three.
Which is best for dry or sensitive skin?
CeraVe Hydrating Mineral SPF 30. It uses only mineral filters, has no fragrance, and adds three ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. Dry-Touch contains fragrance, which is a common trigger for sensitive skin.
Will CeraVe leave a white cast?
Some, yes. Its 11% total of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide shows as a white tint that’s most noticeable on medium to deep skin. If that’s a dealbreaker, the SPF 70 face sunscreen leaves no cast.
Is SPF 70 worth it over SPF 55?
Not for the number. SPF 55 blocks about 98.2% of UVB and SPF 70 about 98.6%. Buy the SPF 70 for its lighter face-specific texture and bemotrizinol, not the extra 15 points.
Use about a half teaspoon for your face and neck, or two full finger lengths, and reapply every two hours outdoors. Only the Dry-Touch lotion is water resistant (80 minutes), so reapply the other two right after swimming or heavy sweating.
Choose CeraVe Hydrating Mineral SPF 30 if your skin is dry, sensitive or eczema-prone. It’s mineral-only (6% titanium dioxide, 5% zinc oxide) with three ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, and no fragrance. Expect some white cast, especially on deeper skin.
Choose Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 55 if your skin is oily or you’ll be sweating or swimming. It dries matte, stays on for 80 minutes in water and costs the least per ounce by far. Skip it if fragrance bothers your skin.
Choose Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Daily Face SPF 70 if you want a light, cast-free face sunscreen for daily wear and makeup. It’s built around bemotrizinol, a newer, stable UVA/UVB filter, but it isn’t water resistant and comes in a small 1.4 oz tube.
