EltaMD UV Clear vs. ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica

EltaMD UV Clear vs. ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica
The short answer

UV Clear is the fragrance-free hybrid. Actinica is the mineral-only one.

EltaMD UV Clear and ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica are both lightweight daily face sunscreens, but they’re built differently. UV Clear is a hybrid: 9% zinc oxide plus 7.5% octinoxate, with niacinamide high on the list and no fragrance. Actinica is mineral-only: 11% zinc oxide and no chemical filters, in an ultralight emulsion that’s labeled water-resistant for 40 minutes. It also contains fragrance and denatured alcohol.

So the choice comes down to two questions. Do you want mineral-only filters? Does fragrance bother your skin? If you want mineral-only and want to hide the white cast, ISDIN’s tinted Eryfotona Ageless is the third option here.

About white cast
White cast: what to expect

Zinc oxide is white, so any sunscreen that leans on it can leave a pale film, and it shows more on deeper skin tones. UV Clear uses less zinc (9%) and gets part of its protection from octinoxate, which is clear. Actinica uses 11% zinc in an ultralight emulsion that spreads it thin, but it’s still all zinc. If cast is your biggest worry, the tinted Ageless uses iron oxides to offset the white.

Whichever you choose, use about a quarter teaspoon for your face and reapply every two hours when you’re outside.

EltaMD UV Clear

EltaMD UV Clear: fragrance-free hybrid with niacinamide

Best Overall
EltaMD UV Clear Oil-Free Zinc Oxide Sunscreen

Fragrance-free hybrid SPF 46 with niacinamide.

Fragrance-Free Niacinamide SPF 46

UV Clear protects with two filters: 9% zinc oxide and 7.5% octinoxate. That makes it a hybrid, not a mineral sunscreen. The upside is that it needs less zinc, so it goes on lighter and leaves less of a white film than most mineral formulas.

Niacinamide sits third on the list, right after water and a silicone, so you’re getting a meaningful amount. It helps calm redness and supports your barrier, a useful extra for acne-prone and easily irritated skin. Sodium hyaluronate adds light hydration, and a small amount of lactic acid sits near the end.

It’s fragrance-free, paraben-free, oil-free and non-comedogenic. It isn’t water-resistant, so it’s an everyday sunscreen rather than a beach one.

Pros
  • Fragrance-free, oil-free and non-comedogenic
  • Niacinamide high on the list, plus hyaluronic acid
  • Lightweight; layers well under makeup
  • Lower price per bottle
Cons
  • Hybrid filters: octinoxate alongside zinc oxide
  • Not water-resistant
  • Contains a little lactic acid, which can sting very reactive skin
Best for
Sensitive or acne-prone skin Fragrance-averse skin Everyday wear under makeup
Not for
Mineral-only routines Swimming or heavy sweating
Is UV Clear the right everyday sunscreen? Best Overall
Fragrance-Free Niacinamide SPF 46

For most faces, yes, and especially for sensitive, acne-prone or fragrance-averse skin. It’s fragrance-free, light under makeup and adds niacinamide. Pass on it only if you want mineral-only filters or need water resistance.

ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica

Eryfotona Actinica: mineral-only SPF 50 in a light emulsion

Best Mineral-Only Option
ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica No-White-Cast Mineral Face Sunscreen

Mineral-only SPF 50 with 11% zinc oxide.

11% Zinc Oxide SPF 50 Water-Resistant

Actinica’s only UV filter is zinc oxide at 11%, a bit more than UV Clear’s 9%, and there’s no chemical filter behind it. That’s the main reason to choose it. It’s labeled water-resistant for 40 minutes, which UV Clear isn’t.

The texture is an ultralight emulsion that spreads thin, so it wears more like a fluid than a thick mineral cream and sits well under makeup. Silicones and light esters do that work. Further down are photolyase (a DNA-repair enzyme from plankton), vitamin E, vitamin C, panthenol and bisabolol.

Two things to know before you buy: the formula contains fragrance, and denatured alcohol sits sixth on the list. Most skin handles both fine. Fragrance-sensitive skin should start with UV Clear.

Pros
  • Mineral-only: 11% zinc oxide, SPF 50
  • Labeled water-resistant for 40 minutes
  • Ultralight emulsion that wears well under makeup
  • 3.4 fl oz bottle, twice the standard UV Clear
Cons
  • Contains fragrance and denatured alcohol
  • Higher price per bottle
  • Zinc can still leave some cast on deeper skin tones
Best for
Mineral-only routines Outdoor days and light sweating
Not for
Fragrance-sensitive skin Tight upfront budgets
Is Actinica worth the higher price? Best Mineral-Only Option
11% Zinc Oxide SPF 50 Water-Resistant

Yes, if you want mineral-only filters or need water resistance. The bottle is twice the size of standard UV Clear, so the real cost gap is smaller than it looks. If fragrance irritates your skin, or you don’t mind a hybrid filter, UV Clear is the better buy.

Tinted alternative

ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless: tinted mineral SPF 50

Best Tinted Option
ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless Tinted Mineral Face Sunscreen

Tinted mineral SPF 50 with peptides.

Tinted 10.7% Zinc Oxide SPF 50

Ageless is built on the same base as Actinica, with a few changes. Its only filter is zinc oxide at 10.7%. Iron oxides add a tint, which is the most reliable way to cancel out the white that zinc leaves behind.

It keeps Actinica’s photolyase, vitamin E and panthenol, and adds glycerin plus two peptides for an anti-aging angle. Like Actinica, it contains fragrance and denatured alcohol.

The catch is color. A tint that suits your skin evens out tone and hides cast; one that doesn’t will show. If you’re between shades or very fair or very deep, try it on your jawline in daylight first.

Pros
  • Iron oxide tint offsets the white of zinc oxide
  • Mineral-only SPF 50 with 10.7% zinc oxide
  • Adds peptides on top of Actinica’s photolyase and vitamin E
Cons
  • The tint won’t match every skin tone
  • Contains fragrance and denatured alcohol
  • Costs more per bottle than UV Clear
Best for
Mineral-only fans who hate white cast Skipping a separate tinted base
Not for
Fragrance-sensitive skin Anyone who wants an untinted finish
Claims worth knowing

What each formula really does

Hybrid
Zinc oxide on the label makes UV Clear a mineral sunscreen.
Zinc does part of the work; octinoxate does the rest.
Not always
A mineral sunscreen is always the gentlest choice.
The base matters as much as the filter.
Skin benefit
Niacinamide makes UV Clear protect better.
Good for skin, not extra SPF.
Bonus, not a fix
The photolyase in Eryfotona reverses sun damage.
Treat the enzyme as a bonus, not a reason to buy.
Patch testing
Patch-test whichever one you pick

UV Clear contains a small amount of lactic acid. Actinica and Ageless both contain fragrance and denatured alcohol. Any of these can sting reactive skin. Apply a little along your jawline for a few days before using it on your whole face. If you have rosacea, eczema or melasma and every sunscreen you try stings, see a dermatologist.

Bottom line

Which sunscreen should you buy?

Choose EltaMD UV Clear if your skin is sensitive, acne-prone or reacts to fragrance. It’s fragrance-free and oil-free, carries niacinamide, and costs less per bottle. Just know it’s a hybrid: zinc oxide plus octinoxate.

Choose ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica if you want a mineral-only SPF 50. It relies on 11% zinc oxide alone, it’s labeled water-resistant for 40 minutes, and its bottle holds twice as much, so per ounce it’s much closer to UV Clear than the shelf price suggests. Skip it if fragrance bothers your skin.

Choose Eryfotona Ageless if you want the same kind of mineral protection with a tint to cancel out white cast, as long as the color works with your skin tone.
