COSRX BHA vs. Paula’s Choice BHA

COSRX BHA vs. Paula's Choice BHA
The formula matters

Paula's Choice uses real salicylic acid. COSRX uses a gentler form and adds niacinamide.

Both are leave-on liquids you pat on after cleansing to clear blackheads and clogged pores. Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid is 2% salicylic acid in a plain, fragrance-free base, and you can build up to daily use. COSRX Niacinamide 2% + BHA 4% uses betaine salicylate, a milder relative of salicylic acid, in willow bark water with 2% niacinamide, panthenol and hyaluronic acid.

That 4% isn’t twice as strong. It’s roughly the same amount of salicylate, delivered more gently. So the choice comes down to how much your skin can take. Oily skin with stubborn blackheads does better with Paula’s Choice. Sensitive skin, or anyone new to acids, should start with COSRX.

Is 4% stronger than 2%?

No. COSRX’s 4% is betaine salicylate, which is salicylic acid bound to betaine. About half of its weight is the salicylate part, so 4% lands in the same range as Paula’s Choice’s 2% salicylic acid, not double it. Betaine salicylate is also the milder form, but start it a few times a week all the same.

Both are leave-on: apply after cleansing and don’t rinse.

COSRX blackhead toner

COSRX Niacinamide 2% + BHA 4%: gentler BHA with niacinamide

Best Gentle Pick
COSRX Niacinamide and BHA Blackhead Exfoliating Toner

Gentler BHA with 2% niacinamide.

4% Betaine Salicylate 2% Niacinamide

This is the liquid long sold as COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid. The list is ten ingredients long. Willow bark water makes up about two-thirds of it, followed by butylene glycol, 4% betaine salicylate and 2% niacinamide, then panthenol, hyaluronic acid and arginine. There’s no fragrance.

Betaine salicylate does the exfoliating. It’s a gentler form of BHA, which makes this a better first acid for sensitive or easily dried-out skin. Niacinamide helps with oil and the look of pores, and panthenol and hyaluronic acid keep it from feeling stripping.

Start it two or three times a week and build up from there. Don’t layer it with other acids, retinol or vitamin C on the same night. Expect slower results on stubborn blackheads than with Paula’s Choice.

Pros 4% betaine salicylate, a gentler form of BHA · 2% niacinamide plus panthenol and hyaluronic acid in the same step · Short, fragrance-free list · Costs less per bottle than Paula's Choice
Cons Slower on stubborn blackheads than 2% salicylic acid · Best kept to a few times a week at first · Shouldn't be layered with other acids, retinol or vitamin C
Paula’s Choice

Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid: straight salicylic acid

Best for Blackheads
Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting BHA Liquid Exfoliant

2% salicylic acid in a simple, fragrance-free liquid.

2% Salicylic Acid Fragrance Free Leave-On

Paula’s Choice keeps it simple: water, methylpropanediol and butylene glycol as the base, 2% salicylic acid, a little green tea extract, and nothing else of note. No fragrance, no niacinamide, no soothing extras. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it works its way into pores and loosens the plugs that turn into blackheads.

It’s the more direct of the two. You can build up to once or twice a day, which suits oily skin with stubborn blackheads on the nose and chin. The trade-off is that sensitive or dry skin may sting or flake at first, and it costs more per bottle than COSRX.

Pros 2% salicylic acid, the standard BHA for clogged pores · Short, fragrance-free formula with green tea extract · Can build up to twice a day once your skin adjusts
Cons Costs more per bottle than COSRX · No niacinamide or other extras · Can dry or sting sensitive skin at first
COSRX toner

COSRX AHA/BHA Toner: a gentle toner, not a blackhead treatment

COSRX AHA and BHA Daily Treatment Toner

Very mild AHA and BHA toner for daily use.

0.1% Glycolic Acid Gentle Daily Toner

This is a different product from the COSRX blackhead liquid, and it often turns up in the same search. It’s water, willow bark water and apple fruit water with 0.1% glycolic acid and a small amount of betaine salicylate, plus allantoin and panthenol to soothe.

At those levels, it’s a mild daily toner that leaves skin feeling a little smoother. It won’t clear blackheads the way Paula’s Choice or the COSRX Niacinamide + BHA can. Buy it if you want a gentle first step into acids; skip it if blackheads are why you’re shopping.

Advantages Very gentle: 0.1% glycolic acid plus a little betaine salicylate · Allantoin and panthenol to soothe · Large 5.07 fl oz bottle
Limitations Too weak to make a real dent in blackheads · Not a substitute for either BHA above · Adds an acid step if you already use one
Getting started

How to start a BHA

  1. Pick one exfoliant

Choose Paula’s Choice or the COSRX Niacinamide + BHA, not both. If you already use an AHA, a retinoid or exfoliating pads, don’t add a BHA on the same night.

  2. Apply to clean, dry skin

After cleansing, pat it on with your hands or a cotton pad. Don’t rinse it off. Wait a minute, then follow with serum or moisturizer.

  3. Start two or three nights a week

Use it every second or third evening for the first two weeks. If your skin stays comfortable, move to every other day, then daily. Paula’s Choice can go up to twice a day; COSRX is better kept at once a day or less.

  4. Wear sunscreen and watch for dryness

Exfoliated skin burns more easily, so use sunscreen every morning. If you get stinging, tightness or flaking, cut back to every other night.

When a BHA isn't enough

A BHA clears blackheads and small clogged pores. It won’t do much for deep, painful breakouts. If those are your main problem, or nothing has helped after a few months, see a dermatologist.

Conclusion

Choose Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid if blackheads and clogged pores are your main problem and your skin handles acids. It’s 2% salicylic acid in a short, fragrance-free formula you can build up to daily use.

Choose COSRX Niacinamide 2% + BHA 4% if you’re newer to acids, your skin is on the sensitive side, or you want niacinamide in the same step. Betaine salicylate is the gentler form of BHA, and it costs less per bottle. Start it two or three times a week.

Skip the COSRX AHA/BHA Toner if blackheads are the goal. Its acids are too low to do much; treat it as a mild toner. Whichever you pick, use one exfoliant at a time and wear sunscreen during the day.
